About BellyUp! Charleston

You don't really know a place from its menu. You find out by Bellyin' Up to the table.

BellyUp! Charleston covers 347 restaurants and bars across 27 neighborhoods. That runs from the peninsula out to Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms and North Charleston.

Charleston rewards people who wander. One bar is behind the fridge in a custard shop. Another is behind a wall of beer cans. So we went looking for those on purpose, and we wrote down how to find each door.

The clearest thing we found in Charleston

The Select, on Meeting Street, announced it was closing on 13 November 2025.

We opened its website on 7 October 2026, almost a year later. The buttons for reservations and online ordering are still there. So is a Thanksgiving menu. Nothing on the page says the restaurant is closed.

A person skimming that page would try to book a table. An AI assistant asked for dinner near Upper King would read the same page and send them.

The Select is not alone. Two Bit Club closed on 13 September 2026, and its site still has a working table request form. Gillie's Seafood has been closed since 2024, and its site still posts summer hours. Our closed list has every date.

And the one that did it right

Ms. Rose's in West Ashley closed on 30 May 2026, after more than ten years.

Its whole website is now one goodbye letter. It names the last day and says why. Nobody is fooled. That is all a closing takes.

What we looked for in Charleston

We did three kinds of research here that go past a normal restaurant list.

  1. Hidden rooms. We looked for alleys, basements, back courtyards and bars tucked inside other businesses. 22 places on this site now carry a "How to find it" line.
  2. What locals say. We read about 100 local threads from 2026 and counted which places people named. The top taco answer is a grocery store.
  3. What closed. We traced closures back to 2019, because old "best of" lists never take a name off.

MICHELIN in Charleston

Charleston is in the MICHELIN Guide American South. Three restaurants hold one star, and the full list is here.

One award winner, Rodney Scott's BBQ, closed on 3 May 2026. A big local list still showed it as open three months later, so we stopped trusting any single list by itself.

The next MICHELIN selection is announced on the evening of 21 October 2026. We will update that night.

How we decide what to publish

Public sources only. We start with the restaurant's own website. Then a named local publication. Then public posts. Nobody's memory of a visit counts, including ours.

A local mention tells us a place exists and that people are going. It does not prove a detail like "dog friendly". For that we still need the place itself or a named source.

Here is where we stand today, in plain numbers.

  • 216 places are confirmed open by a dated 2026 source.
  • 131 places have a working website or a recent write-up, and we could not find anything dated this year to go with it.

You can help with those 131. See the list and tell us what you know. It takes about a minute.

We also keep a list of 86 web addresses we will never link. Some now lead to gambling pages. Some are parked for sale. A few belong to businesses in other states that happen to share a name.

What BellyUp! Charleston covers

The City of Charleston, which includes West Ashley, James Island, Johns Island and Daniel Island. Plus the places locals treat as part of a Charleston night out: Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach and North Charleston.

Summerville, Goose Creek, Hanahan, Kiawah and Seabrook are outside. They are their own places.

National chains and airport counters are out. Charleston-born groups are in, and we say which room is which.

Why BellyUp! Charleston exists

Every platform a restaurant is already on tracks the same few things: where you are, what you serve and what people scored you. None of them track why somebody would choose you.

The courtyard. The dock at sunset. The owner. The reason the regulars are regulars.

So we sort those reasons into discovery categories and publish them where any search engine or AI can read them. Then we check whether search and AI can actually see them.

If we have something wrong, tell us. If it is your restaurant, you can claim the profile and correct it for free. We would rather be corrected than be another stale page.
