Where Locals Eat in Charleston

We read a year of local Charleston threads and counted the names. The top taco answer is a grocery store.

Ask a Charleston local where to get tacos and the top answer is not a restaurant. It is El Molino, a Mexican grocery in West Ashley with a taco counter in the back.

We know because we counted. We read about 100 food and drink threads from the Charleston subreddit in 2026 and wrote down which places people named.

The Charleston places locals named most in 2026

PlaceThreadsWhat locals say
Home Team BBQ30Named for the wings far more than the barbecue
Lewis Barbecue23The brisket answer. Some grumble about the price
Swig & Swine18Wings and gold sauce
The Royal American17The dive bar answer, with a patty melt
Moe's Crosstown Tavern16Wings and a burger
Halls Chophouse16Known for service first, steak second
Leon's Oyster Shop14Liked, and argued over
Heavy's Barburger13The first burger people name
The Obstinate Daughter12The gnocchi gets the most praise of any single dish
Jackrabbit Filly11The Park Circle favorite

Notice what leads that list. It is wings, burgers and barbecue, not shrimp and grits. That is the gap between where visitors are sent and where locals go on a Tuesday.

Two Charleston favorites locals are still talking about

Two of the twenty most-named places are closed. Rodney Scott's BBQ closed in May 2026 and Dashi closed in June. Most of the talk about both is people missing them. Our closed list has the dates.

One came back. Nirlep, an Indian restaurant on Savannah Highway, reopened on 15 September 2026 after nearly three years shut.

For Italian, locals send each other out to Wild Olive on Johns Island. For mustard sauce, the name is Melvin's.

Counts come from public posts on the Charleston subreddit in 2026, read through a public archive on 7 October 2026. We paraphrase and never name the people who posted. Readers' picks: Charleston City Paper, Best of Charleston 2026.
