Home Team BBQ began in an old gas station in West Ashley.
The Shrimp City Report podcast talks with Aaron Siegel, the founder and chef of Home Team. The episode is 31 minutes long and is dated September 4, 2026. The episode title is 20 Years Of Home Team BBQ with Aaron Siegel.
From a gas station to several Home Team restaurants
The episode page says Aaron talks about growing up in Atlanta, studying English at UGA and going to the Culinary Institute of America. He also lived and cooked in Aspen before he moved to Charleston.
Then comes the Home Team story. The page says the old gas station in West Ashley became a barbecue place, and the menu grew as the business added more locations. Home Team's own story page says Aaron turned a mid 1900s gas station into the first Home Team in 2006, and its timeline lists the West Ashley opening that year.
Aaron also talks about the cooking style, which mixes Southern barbecue with southwestern ideas. He names dishes such as wings, pork, nachos and brisket. He tells how a frozen drink became a Home Team icon after a naming dispute and a naming contest for customers.
A 20th anniversary weekend at The Refinery
The episode also previews Home Team's 20th anniversary weekend at The Refinery in September. The page describes a three night, concert style event with local and touring acts, special guests and VIP options.
The Refinery is at 1640 Meeting Street in The Neck. Home Team's West Ashley restaurant is at 1205 Ashley River Road. Both are in the BellyUp! Charleston directory.
What we could not confirm: we read the episode page and its description, but we did not listen to all 31 minutes. The page says three nights. A ticket page listed one show on Saturday, September 26, with no year shown. We also could not find out how the weekend went.
